Daikin hydraulic power unit for straightening press: motion control without proportional valves in the hydraulic circuit
In a hydraulic straightening press, process quality does not depend only on the applied force, but on how that force is controlled and managed over time.
Progressiveness, precision and repeatability are essential. Achieving this result without proportional valves is the technical approach behind this application developed through the collaboration between Mekoil Oleodinamica and Duplomatic MS.
The role of the Daikin hydraulic power unit in the hydraulic circuit
The Daikin Industries hydraulic power unit does more than simply supply the circuit.
In this application it performs the dynamic control of oil flow and working pressure, determining the machine behaviour during the pressing and widening phases.
Motion proportionality is built upstream: the power unit modulates flow and pressure according to the operational demand, making a dedicated proportional valve distribution unnecessary. Motion control is therefore achieved directly through the regulation logic of the power unit, rather than through additional valves.
This architecture, implemented within the system developed by Mekoil in collaboration with Duplomatic, enables precise and repeatable hydraulic control while maintaining a simplified circuit layout.
Eliminating proportional valves: what really changes
The adoption of the Daikin solution made it possible to completely eliminate proportional valves, both directional and pressure control types, which are normally required to achieve controllable motion in hydraulic systems of this kind.
From a system engineering perspective, this results in:
- a more rational hydraulic circuit, with reduced construction complexity
- smooth movements and progressive thrust using standard on/off valves
- improved stability of the manoeuvre during the most critical operating phases
In a straightening press, these aspects directly affect the quality of the contact with the workpiece, reducing abrupt movements and increasing control and operational sensitivity during the most delicate straightening phases.
Integration with proportional joystick radio control
The system is operated through a radio remote control with a proportional joystick. The command signal given by the operator is translated by the power unit into a coherent hydraulic response, ensuring intuitive and precise motion control without requiring a traditional proportional valve distribution.
This solution combines architectural simplicity with high dynamic quality: the power unit interprets the command signal and manages its hydraulic response directly.
Energy efficiency: intelligent management of the second pump
In addition to motion control, the Daikin power unit introduces an energy management logic based on monitoring the system pressure and adapting the power to the actual demand.
The electronics manage a dedicated solenoid valve that allows the second pump to be disengaged when the system pressure exceeds 70 bar. This mechanism prevents power absorption from exceeding the available capacity, adapting the operation of the power unit to the real load conditions.
The result is a reduction in power peaks and an improvement in the overall efficiency of the hydraulic system, without modifying the structure of the hydraulic circuit.
